Description and details

Maurice Lacroix Date Automatic ref. 68641

The Maurice Lacroix Date Automatic ref. 68641 is an elegant automatic watch from the 1990s, originating from a period of dynamic growth for the Maurice Lacroix brand. This model combines a classic steel case, sapphire crystal, screw-down case back, an automatic ETA 2824 movement, and an original black leather strap.

The presented timepiece dates from approximately 1992-1995. The watch features a case with a diameter of about 36 mm without the crown, which is a very versatile and elegant size. It is a good choice for someone looking for a classic automatic watch with a understated look, a Swiss movement, and timeless styling.

Movement

At the heart of the watch is the automatic ETA 2824 movement. This is one of the most recognizable and highly-regarded Swiss automatic movements, used by many watch brands for decades.

The ETA 2824 movement was introduced in the 1970s and quickly became a significant benchmark in the watchmaking industry. Its popularity stemmed from a combination of reliability, good precision, wide availability of parts, and practical everyday usability.

The ETA 2824 had a lasting impact on the watch industry. Thanks to efficient production, stable construction, and good operating parameters, this movement was used in both elegant and sports watches. For over fifty years, it remained one of the most frequently chosen automatic movements in Swiss watches.

The movement has automatic winding, meaning the watch is wound while worn on the wrist. This is a convenient and practical solution, especially for those who wish to use a mechanical watch daily.

The ETA 2824, in its typical configuration, operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 38-40 hours. The movement is known for its smooth operation, durability, and ease of servicing, which is a significant advantage for pre-owned watches.

It is precisely these types of movements that have made many watches from the 1980s and 1990s remain practical, useful, and valued mechanical timepieces to this day.

Case and Dial

The watch case is made of stainless steel and has a classic, round shape. The case diameter is approximately 36 mm without the crown, width with the crown is about 38 mm, height is about 9 mm, and the "lug to lug" dimension is about 38 mm.

These are very comfortable and elegant proportions. The watch sits well on the wrist and maintains a classic character. The 36 mm size makes the model subtle, yet still legible and versatile.

The case is styled in the understated manner typical of classic Maurice Lacroix watches from the 1990s. The steel construction gives the watch durability and everyday usability, while maintaining an elegant appearance.

The watch features an original crown and a screw-down case back. These are practical structural elements that emphasize the solid character of the watch.

Sapphire crystal is used in this model. It is highly valued in watches due to its high scratch resistance. Compared to hesalite or mineral glass, sapphire crystal is more resistant to everyday micro-scratches, ensuring the watch retains its aesthetic appearance longer.

The dial has a classic, orderly character. The date function emphasizes the utilitarian nature of the model and makes the watch well-suited as an everyday timepiece.

Strap

The watch is equipped with an original black leather strap. The strap is of high quality and complements the steel case and the elegant character of the watch.

The strap width is 18 mm. The black leather gives the watch a more formal, classic look and pairs well with both elegant and casual attire.

Watch Condition

The watch is a pre-owned piece. It may show natural signs of wear resulting from its age, previous use, and the nature of the watch. The detailed visual condition is shown in the product photos.

For watches from the 1990s, natural signs of use are a normal part of the timepiece's history. The photos are an integral part of the description and show the actual appearance of the watch offered.

Set and Warranty

The watch is sold as a pre-owned item. The detailed scope of the set is visible in the product photos.

The product is covered by a 100-day Dial-House warranty. The warranty covers the correct operation of the watch movement, excluding mechanical damage, water damage, improper use, natural wear of consumable parts, and interference by third parties.

History of Maurice Lacroix

Maurice Lacroix was founded in 1975 when Desco von Schulthess, a company established in 1889, began producing watches under its own brand. Previously, Desco von Schulthess was involved in the watch industry, operating as both a manufacturer and distributor.

In 1961, Desco von Schulthess acquired Tiara, an assembly plant in Saignelégier, Switzerland. Initially, it primarily produced watches for external entities. Over time, the Maurice Lacroix brand began to gain increasing popularity and recognition.

In 1980, Desco von Schulthess ceased production for external brands in Saignelégier to focus exclusively on the development of Maurice Lacroix. This was a significant moment, as the brand began to build its own identity, collections, and market position.

In 1989, Maurice Lacroix acquired the case manufacturer Queloz SA. This allowed the brand to begin its own production of one of the most important elements of watch design – the cases. This was a step towards greater independence and control over manufacturing quality.

In the 1990s, Maurice Lacroix experienced very dynamic growth. The brand was valued for its attractive price-to-quality ratio, elegant design, and a wide range of mechanical and quartz watches. The presented Maurice Lacroix Date Automatic ref. 68641 originates from this very period.

In 2001, Maurice Lacroix became an independent company with its own workshops. In 2006, the brand introduced its first in-house movement – the hand-wound chronograph ML106. This step led Maurice Lacroix to be perceived as a more vertically integrated manufacturer.

By 2010, the company employed approximately 220 people and had a sales network covering approximately 4,000 stores in over 60 countries. Maurice Lacroix built its position as a brand offering elegant, well-made Swiss watches with an attractive quality-to-price ratio.
